New family area starting 26 March 2021

The miniXplore puts a focus on playful exploration – without giving instructions and without “right” or “wrong”, enabling children and accompanying adults to venture on STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) without fear of failure while having a lot of fun and excitement.
The new interactive exhibition for families with children from age 3 stimulates the joy of experimentation and activity, because the versatile adventure playground spanning 500 m² holds numerous stations in store for curious explorers! Alongside technical and scientific understanding, the miniXplore promotes communication, cooperation, creativity and problem-solving skills.

Playful learning
The educational concept of the interactive exhibition meets children’s needs on several levels. Multi-sensory impressions are a central element of miniXplore: see, hear, feel, experience – children learn by using all their senses. Accompanying adults are also included in the exhibition concept, so young explorers always have adults to assist them and join the fun.

Designed for lasting inspiration
The room’s artistic and architecturally diverse design also encourages children on various levels to become active and discover new things. Famous street artist RUIN, who is prominently represented in Vienna’s cityscape with his expressive artwork, was entrusted to design the walls. General Director Peter Aufreiter is pleased with the collaboration: “We wanted the artistic design to appeal to both children and adults and stimulate imagination. RUIN took exactly the “think-out-of-the-box” concept we want to inspire in miniXplore to an artistic level.”

Sustainability also played a role in designing the room. Natural materials, such as birchwood, sheep’s wool, Swiss pine wood shavings, cherry stones or buckwheat chaff, were used wherever possible, in addition to recycled plastics and environmentally certified furniture. Moreover, regional businesses were given priority when selecting external partners.

The new family area is a part of the exhibition format on research, innovation and technology that was developed in collaboration with the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK).
